Vaseline saucers and aqua jars By Aniwa and Malia.

How to make a vasiline saucer.
First you get a clean saucer .
Then you pick some colourful  flowers and rub some vasiline on your saucer.
After that you pick the petals off your flowers and stick them to the saucer.
And finally you let them dry.
And that is how you make a vasiline saucer.

How to make a aqua jar.
First you get a clear jar.
Then you pick big flowers with long stems.
After that you stick the flowers to the lid with plastersine
Next you put some dye or water in the jar.
Finally you put the lid on the jar.
And that is how you make a aqua jar.

NZ Shake Up. By Paige

On Wednesday 26th September at 9:26 all over New Zealand people were practising their earthquake drill in the New Zealand Shake out drill.
Mrs Dunn shouted, "Earthquake!! get under your desks - drop, cover and hold."
I got under my desk and held onto my desk, I was looking away from the window because it could smash.,
We were all giggling and laughing.
Then Mrs Dunn said, " Stay under your desks until we hear the all clear bell."
Then we lined up on the field and the teachers called the roll to check if everyone was there.
It was fun and exciting and it was good that it was not a real earthquake.

St John By Michaela

On Wednesday we saw Olivia the St Johns teacher.

She taught us how to wrap a persons hand with a bandage if their hand was bleeding and you wanted it to stop bleeding. It was fun wrapping the persons hand up but not so much fun to have to roll the long bandage up again!
When someone is hurt and you need help ring 111. The operator will ask for your phone number, your address and what the problem is. Do not hang up because they give you lots of information on the way and you should send someone out to the gate so they can see where you are.

Calves at Calf Club by Phoebe

The day before we washed our calves with water and a special type of oil. Then we brushed them a lot.We cleaned their hooves with a toothbrush.
On calf club I had to get the water from the fountain twice because our calves knocked it over.
We had to brush them lots and lots after we got to school.
 I came 2nd, 2nd, 3rd and Reserve Champion .
After that my pants got chewed by my calf!
Soon I'm going to another show called the Wellsford show and I'm going to do the same thing  again.
The Wellsford show is on Saturday. It will be really fun.

Lambs at Calf Club By Jasmine

On show day I took my lamb called Polly.
We got up early to get Polly ready. She needed her milk and sheep pallets and water.
First I had to scrub her knees and back legs with a cloth and shampoo!
Then Polly was put on the trailer but she didn't like it, she went "Maaaa, maaa all the way to school."
The first thing I had to do was walk around the ring with Polly
Then I had to take my lamb to a person who would hold it .
Then I had to run to the other end and call it and if it comes to you take the lambs led and then you take it and they do the judging.
Then they do prize giving and I got a first for calling and meat type and reserve champion.
And then I went home and  put my ribbons away and put Polly in the paddock and now I and Polly are going to group day.

Christmas Box Donation

Operation Christmas Gift -
"Open up a whole new life ... for a child in Papua New Guinea,
through the power of a simple gift."

Our  Bible in Schools teacher Mrs Mason asked our class gave a gold coin so that we could put some gifts together in a show box for a boy and a girl in Papua New Guinea to receive at Christmas.
In our box we had a Christmas teddy, a toothbrush, stickers, a skipping rope, a pencil, soap, a beanie. We felt good because our money brought the Christmas gifts and these children do not get any Christmas presents - but they will this year because of us!

ASB Getwise By Wyatt

On Monday  one of the ASB people came his name was Julian and he turned onto hard working Harry. And Harry told us what the money names are called around the world. One of the money was from India which was called rupee and the next money was from South Africa and that money was called rand.
We had to do 3 tests and we did the chant called "Save my money."
Harry was funny as! (: At the end Hard Working Harry turned back into Julian)
I learned that you should save your money " Spend some on you but save some too."

Electrical Safety By Michaela and Nadia

ELECTRICAL SAFETY
Vector came to our school on Wednesday.
We now know how to be safe around electrical stuff. You have to turn the power off before you go near anything that is electrical and you wouldn't play around the electricity transmitters or you could get badly burnt like a boy did.
We are made of water inside our body and your body can conduct the electricity.

"Phone a Friend." By Aniwa and Mia and Josephine

On Wednesday a comedy play group called "Playhouse" came to our school to show us a play called "Phone a friend".
It was so funny. The people were Brick phone , Denise, Winston,
Mum, Dad and Mr Music. It was so funny because there was a
funny song and we could call out and interact with the people in the play.

Graeme Braddock Artist By Jasmine

On Wednesday we went to see Mr Braddock
and had lessons with him.The first thing we did was that we had to do was to plan out our drawing of the banana's, cabbage and apple. and put a mark where the begining middle and end of the picture was going to be.
Then we draw the sub shapes.
Next we drew the big shapes, this was called setting the limits.
Last we shaded where the shadows fell.
We all drew really good pictures and we all want to draw more.
We asked Mr Braddock  some questions like what was the first picture you remember drawing?.Mr Braddock's first picture was a fat policeman.
I had fun doing art.

Wow look at those big waves!
I can’t wait to go surfing but first I need to wriggle into my wetsuit and put on the leg rope.

I grab my enormous board, it is Soooo big – it is hard to carry!
Remember to look out for rips. Rips can drag you all the way out to sea if you don’t watch out for them.

Slowly I walk into the freezing water then I jump onto my board and start paddling slowly through the rough waves.

I get out past the breaking waves, then I turn and wait for a good wave.
Here comes a good big one and I wait for the big wave to catch me. Just a few seconds later the big wave is right behind me.
Quick, start paddling as fast as I can so that I can catch that wave.

My board slides through the water as I stand up. Carefully, woo put your arms out to stop that wooble. It may look easy to stand up but it is very hard.
I go zooming into the beach like a racing car.
Then crash!
I tumble into the rolling waves and grab onto my board.

Wow that was great!
I turn my board around and start paddling out through the rolling waves again to catch another great wave.

I love surfing. Standing on your board as the wave catches you and you go gliding through across the water like you are flying is awesome.

Nadia Tomarata School speech finalist

On windy days at Tomarata School there is litter blowing around everywhere! – paper, gladwrap, muesli bar wrappers and small chippie packets.

It looks horrible.
How can we make our school litter free?
We can make less litter if we use containers instead of gladwrap.

You can use lunch wrap instead of gladwrap.
Did you know that gladwrap never breaks down in the landfill? So don’t use glapwrap or there will be plastic rubbish everywhere.

You could make your food instead of buying it in a packet. That will be cheaper for you and we will have less rubbish at our school.
I think everyone should not litter at our school and if you have a litterless lunch with no gladwrap or wrappers or plastic bags then we would have no litter at our school and we would have less rubbish in the landfill.

Can you make a litterless lunch?
Yes you can!

Nadia

Lisa wins the interschool speech finals!

Why Do People Litter?
Look at all that litter on the ground! Empty packets of chips flying around in the wind. Squished fruit on the steps – Yuck that looks disgusting! Someone’s crusts that they don’t want to eat. Gladwrap flying across the deck. Why do they litter? Because they are too lazy to put their rubbish in the right bin. That empty packet of chips should stay in your lunch box. Don’t drop your fruit on the ground so that someone slips on that banana! Put it in the compost bin so the worms can have a tasty treat. Eat your crusts you big baby! Or you could feed them to the worms in the compost bin. Don’t even bring gladwrap to school, use wax paper around your sandwiches or you could put food in to containers. But don’t leave your containers at school. I think everyone should just put there rubbish in the right bin and not litter. If people keep on littering our school is going to be a rubbish dump. Would you like to go to school in a rubbish dump? No way! So don’t litter, think about having a litterless lunch. By Lisa.

Fun Run by Michaela and Holly

On the Fun Run we had to run for 40 minutes, and that was really,REALLY HARD! because we had to run for a long time. We jumped hay bales, we went under a big heavy mat and we got wet when we went past the sprinkler. After that we got a juicey and that was the best part.
We got sponsors to give us money and we raised    $3,000:00          for Tomarata School. Then we got to choose a reward for participating and getting all that money. I got a clutch purse and Holly got some monster pens - everyone who did the fundraising got something and it was like Christmas when Naomi and Vanessa brought it all to our class and Mrs Dunn gave it to us.

Red Sock Day by Michael and Jasper

RED  SOCK'S DAY
Friday 29th  of June was red socks day. It is a day to support  leadership in action and what in means to be a New Zealander. We brought red socks to support the Sir Peter Blake Trust who run leadership programmes for kids.

Omaha Marae by Mia and Renee

On Thursday  Tomarata went to the Omaha marae and room 5 and 6 got to have a sleepover .
We got to sing "Utaina ma and Haera mai and Te Hei Maoriora."
We all got to do games at the marae. The games were nuckel bones, flax flowers and also string games, stick games, poi, myths and legends - there was a lot  of games.
We also  saw a whales jawbone at the entrance to the marae and when we walked in we went under the backbone of a whale .
We had a really good time.

Soccer hockey day by Callum and Wyatt

On Wednesday we went to the soccer grounds to play soccer & hockey. It was fun and we won all of the games but one. It was the best day ever.Bryson was in my team but Callum wasn't in my team but that doesn't matter. We won some games. Bryson was good being the goalie.
I like the soccer the best because I got to be the goalie and I got to pick the ball up in my hands.
In hockey you can smack the ball further than if you are just kicking it.
It is fun to try new sports.
